Summary

This will make a lens cap with a hole in it for holding a solar filter. The filter is sandwiched between the cap and a ring that fits inside the cap. The whole assembly is then slid over the lens/optics tube to help hold it together. It is recommended that they be secured with electrical tape when in use.

The original file on Tinkercad and the linked spreadsheet will enable you to customize it for yourself.

How I Designed This

Do NOT ever look directly at the Sun, especially under magnification, unless using proper solar filters. It is recommended that you test it first before looking through with your eyes.

For any circular lens- measure the outer diameter, the depth of the rim, and the thickness of the rim and plug those values into this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18Wh-mBp70nAMvAXyKd8Wn3KM-2W6K5RehNpquBut4lE/copy . It will calculate the dimensions for you. Adjust the dimensions of the cylinders in this Tinkercad file and it will make a solar filter holder. The solar filter is sandwiched between a cap and the ring and pressed together against the lens. Secure ring to cap with cyanoacrylic glue (one drop at 12, 3, 6, & 9 should do it) if you'd like and I recommend securing it to the optical tube with electrical tape, especially if there is any play in the fit (make sure the tape is easy to remove if using during a solar eclipse).

I made something similar in 2017 and printed it in PLA, but the sidewalls were too thin and most of them warped in the heat. After test printing a few, these are probably a little too thick, but I based the thickness on the thickness of lens caps & covers. For some printers the rings might be too thin for the nozzle, but scaling/enlarging in the vertical axis is simple. Also, don't make the other mistake I made in 2017 and forget to make solar filters for your spotter scopes on telescopes (or alternatively there are solar finders that are printable).
