Summary

This is a tool I designed to remove the black washers inside the Macintosh 800k and 1.4M manual-inject floppy drives when you are dis-assembling them for lube and service.

In some YouTube repair videos, they just skip over the difficult removal of these, probably they don't want to embarrass themselves in front of their fans.

They are not split washers and you can easily damage them or the smooth slide surfaces if you just use a screwdriver to pry them out

It will take you longer to make this tool, than to get those pesky washers out using it. Trust me, it's worth the time.

How I Designed This

Making it:

You simply take a single edge razor blade, and a Dremel (or similar) rotary tool with a cutoff wheel and cut the blade to the dimensions shown.

There are also plastic scraper blades, made to the dimensions of a single edge razor blade, that may work and would be safer.

If you have a laser cutter, please feel free to remix this and upload the files to cut one.

How to use it:

Just slide it under the washer as shown, and use the spine of the blade as a handle.

Give it a little lift, wiggle it, etc., and presto. You can put your finger over the washer if you're afraid it may go flying.

I used the oval tool bit from my iFixIt Moray driver kit to snap them back down during re-assembly.

Please wear appropriate safety gear (glasses, mask, etc.) when making and using this tool.

Be careful, the blade is sharp, you can dull the edge a bit with the Dremel, if you feel the need to. As long as it has some taper it is easy to slide under the washers.
