Little Detailed History:
The Tiger II or more specifically Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. B as by its logistical name, is a Heavy Breakthrough Tank designed to supersede the partly rushed semi-interim design that was the Tiger I. It was quite successful in its role and purpose as a Heavy Breakthrough Tank, however its strengths mostly lie in its tactical capabilities. Often the Tiger IIs and even Tiger Is would struggle in achieving a breakthrough in a strategic manner, with only a few rare instances of it ever occurring.
As a Heavy Breakthrough Tank, it was part of the Heavy Breakthrough tank project being the VK 45 series of designs. VK 45 basically stood for the initial proposal of the tank and its rough weight, 45 denoting the initial planned weight.
The projects would stem from the former VK 30 to the VK 36, then finally to the VK 45. The first of the VK 45 project being born as the infamous Tiger I under the project name VK 45.01, with specifically the VK 45.01 (H) being used while the VK 45.01 (P) would have their chassis used for the Ferdinand / Elefant Heavy Tank Destroyer.
The Tiger I in itself was a semi rushed design, but was done pretty well, while it has its flaws, many may severely overstate them while others may severely understate them, but overall, the Germans were seeking to quickly supersede the design with something better in every aspect. This would lead to the next step in the Vk 45 project being that of the VK 45.02 with both a Porsche and Henchel design proposed. However both would not be used. What would be used is the Turret. Developed by Krupp, what is commonly know as the Porsche Turret wasn't designed by Porsche, rather it was a Turret made by Krupp for use with the Porsche designed chassis. This turret may also be referred to as a pre-production turret. Interestingly 3 prototypes of the Vk 45.02(P) were made, all of which being the Ausf. B rear turreted design. This project would be viewed as the "original" Tiger II.
With the VP 45.02 project not meeting the evolving needs and demands of the army, the VK 45.02 project was shelved and a new project born. The VK 45.03 would now take the mantle of superseding the Tiger I with its own designs. This would become the Tiger II as we know it today. The official VK 45.03 prototype would not be built, however it would.be modified heavy a small bit and become the Tiger II.
Originally the Tiger II was actually supposed to be called the Tiger III, however given that no vehicles of the VK 45.02 entered a series production phase, the name would be changed to Tiger II officially.
NOTE: If someone uses what I modify or even make from scratch, sell the 3d prints, please give reference to me. It makes me happy for more people see my stuff.
ENJOY!!!
